They were. Political exchanges between political personages of the time were blunt to the point of intentional insult; duels want on between many beside Hamilton & Burr. Physical assaults by Congress members on other members continued through and after the Civil War years.

Political politeness didn't really come into vogue until WWII and became the norm for a while, seems we're just regressing to what we once were. Wait until the next right wing Congress relaxes the ban on firearms for members and takes the next step requiring any sworn Representative to carry or be denied admittance to the chamber.

The results might do what the inability to ban Congressional term limits failed to do.

"YOU'RE A LIAR!" -- that offensive southern state Congressman didn't address him as Mr. President. This, however, is the sort of thing our Founding Fathers would have found quite the norm, except they would have expected the aggrieved Congressman to append it with the appropriate title.
