in one word drupal. c5 is not appropriate for a school site. period. iweb would be a hack at best.
WP has no equivalent to Views, and that is a very, very powerful way of managing content. think about profiles, student to teacher relationships, etc. let's just start here. node one. let me introduce you to my favorite friend. johan. watch every one of his screencasts. he's a master. if after this you choose other, then good luck. http://nodeone.se/learn-drupal/items dot.

Dotman;
Don't keep equivocating, man... Take a stand! Just kidding. I'll give Drupal a good hard look!

btw, skip mamp for drupal dev. use acquia. and don't use "new" site to get setup.
http://www.acquia.com/downloads#acquia-drupal that is there distro of drupal, which of course you won't be running in production. download Core, and use "Import" to setup your sandbox. that way you know you're using the actual RC. have fun pm if you want help getting your local environment setup. dot.

Curious to know what C5's inappropriateness is for a school site. You can set up user login (and other) permissions based on individuals or groups for example. I also recall one of their long-ago established site examples being a school's site.
The good news is that the site requirements sound pretty simple, regardless of what's chosen.

Someone mentioned Google Sites. My real dilemma is whether to go with a Rapidweaver/Sandvox/iWeb type approach or to use one of the many hosting companies' web-based website creators? In theory, the latter seems the easiest way to go. They all claim to include most everything, e-commerce if needed, SEO, etc. without the user having to know much of anything. I want to set up a simple online consulting biz (not selling technical services!), where people can learn about the why and the details of the various offerings, and then buy with credit cards either by specifying a number of hours, or choosing some fixed priced packages. The ability to tie in a blog would be great too, and obviously I'd want it to be easy to find/promote.
