question about handbrake and blueray
#1
I've started ripping some blue ray files for my appletv2. I'm only doing this for special movies that I really want to look great. I usually start out with a 12gb file and using the universal setting I end up with a 2gb file. I assume I'm loosing a lot of quality this way. So I tried the appletv2 setting and ended up with a 4gb+ sized file which is pretty huge.

My question is, what is the most appropriate handbrake setting to use for blue ray content? I assume the appletv2 setting will give me the best quality but I want to make sure I'm not wasting disc space by using too high of a setting.

As a bit of background, I'm using a 42" tv but am considering a move to 50". I have no surround sound and do not plan to ever have surround sound. So that isn't a concern at all.

If the files you make with the AppleTV2 setting work well on the AppleTV2, then that's the best quality you'll get out of it regardless of original source and is the appropriate setting.

The ATV2 setting always produces larger files than the Universal setting for reasons stated at Handbrake's site: it has to work on the lowest common-denominator, i.e. old iPods.

ATV2 is 720p. BR could be 1080p. So your files can be smaller even without compression.

You might not see a difference, however, on the 42" TV.
