new printer water testing
#1
We may or may not be looking into getting a replacement for our ricoh office printer. I currently use it as a printer but since it's not PS, I have to print through my Windows VM. A regular PITA but I've adjusted to it.

At any rate, we've been recently thinking of replacing it. My thought was just getting a PRINTER printer. No scanning, or faxing or copying etc. Unfortunately a few people use it for that too. Then i realized that we have a cheapy Brother inkjet that would handle scanning which I could then print if necessary.

So just looking for some preferences or brands (models) to avoid. My requirements are:
1. Quality
2. Speed
3. Quality
4. Speed
5. Duplexing
6. Tabloid

So.. what are your requirements ? B&W Proofing only ? Tabloid size ? Color proofs ? Full Bleeds ? Printing onto the sides of moving supersonic aircraft ?

It's a production printer. We print all our literature on it. Full color. We do some tabloid stuff...see #6. No supersonics just yet.

For a production printer? Xerox hands down. The Phaser is the industry standard. Buy what your budget and consumables budget will allow. I'm assuming you have looked into leasing a bigger fullsize copier with a Fiery RIP and those are out of the question.

Final literature that customers put their hands on, or just for color-checking and proofing said literature before it goes off to press? If it's final, you're probably not going to want inkjet prints going to your customers.

You say tabloid size, but does that mean edge-to-edge printing or bleeds on tabloid sized paper? If so, then you really mean a 13x19 capable printer so you can get your bleeds. I had an Epson something-or-other a long time ago that was capable of holding 13x19 paper. It was really nice for proofing catalog covers/pages. It was kinda goofy though, because there was a companion software RIP that it needed to work properly. Blech...

I would agree with the Phaser recommendation. Just not sure if those will give you the large-format bleed features, if those are even important to you.

Yes. I've had good experience with Xerox in the past as well. By production I mean all our final literature is printed in house since we change it a lot so it's not really practical to have it printed in large quantity. So what I print is what goes into the customer's hands. I've designed a lot of our pieces with no bleed for this very reason. We print tabloid size quite a bit but not nearly on the scale of regular 8.5x11. And again, nothing requiring a bleed. I do that on purpose.

I see some things have not changed with Xerox printers. I was looking at the options for the 7760. One of which is an extra 512mb of RAM. How much is it? $719.00! A quick google search yields a compatible 512mb chip for $12.95! That's quite a markup.

Same as Apple. Ram is something that is ALWAYS cheaper aftermarket. I'm not sure that ram would neccessarily work though. Xerox is pretty picky about ram, just matching the specs isn't going to cut it. Gotta find something made for that printer.

You want to print underwater?

What does water have to do with the inquiry?

Are there special tests for printers now that include using H20 in part of the testing?
