original post, http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/118...msg-118880

as the original post states, dead drive, took it out, found blown chip on PCB board, asked if anyone had one.....

found one on eBay, had friend buy it, swapped the boards, recovered all data.

this is the eBay drive, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8827380996&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

congrats. BTW- was the drive making any sounds when it was bad?

no sounds at all, the board was fried and it wouldn't spin up at all, after I put the new board on it works perfectly.

$15 + shipping wouldn't even pay for the labor to desolder the bad IC, much less replace it.

Kharma was good to you. Glad to see it worked out, now resell the drives to get some money back ::o

so the moral of the story is always have a spare handy, or at least know how to score one cheaply & quickly, in case parts are needed... glad it worked out well.

Actually, the BETTER lesson is;
BACK STUFF UP so you don't have to go ripping other hard drives apart in the desperate hope that it's going to let you use the fried drive long enough to recover your data...

Glad it worked out, though!
Now go smack your friend upside the noggin and get him to burn some backups... Big Grin
