Trying to plan warm weather December vacation...any ideas?
#31
So Cal in December is really a crap shoot at best. There will be some dry days, guaranteed, and some could be pretty warm if a Santa Ana develops. bfd knows this because he's never had a real Christmas tree that wasn't desiccated by the time Christmas Day arrived. There's also a good chance that between warm days, you'll get some rather cold, stormy days with rain. It's one of the rainier and more unpredictable months of the year. January is a little more predictable - a few days of rain, but mostly sunny, clear weather. Rarely too cold or too hot in most areas. It's the "high season" in desert cities.

Water temp in S.D. by December is in the low 60's/hi 50's. So it's cold water - at least for locals. But there are always plenty of tourists at the beaches or at the hotels by the bay in December. The downsides here are the hours of light and hours of operation of many of the tourist attractions in December. 10am-4pm is pretty normal - and it doesn't make for a long day. Disney may have a little more extensive hours at Christmas break, but it's ALWAYS crowded there from Thanksgiving through New Years Day.

A Christmas cruise is more expensive than cruises at other times of the year, but they're definitely something worth looking into. There are 15 day trips from San Diego or L.A. to Hawaii and back. Also trips to the Mexican Riviera from So. Cal ports. If you do it right, it's not much more than going to any of those places and paying to stay there. You just have to risk your life on the floating petri dish… but bfd's never had a problem on a cruise. Maybe it's all the alcohol. Tends to be a good germ killer.
