10.8 "fix" for Dashboard full-screen mode
#1
In 10.6, you could open Dashboard as an overlay on top of whatever was visible on screen. In 10.8, invoking Dashboard takes it into full screen mode with other apps not visible in the background. For me, this was frustrating because I often used the Dashboard calculator in 10.6 for all sorts of quick calculations while reviewing numbers in a variety of programs.

I was digging around today, and found that in 10.8.1 (not sure about .0), you can get rid of this new behavior. In System Prefs > Mission Control, uncheck the first checkbox in the control panel " Show Dashboard as a space", and you get the "old" Dashboard overlay behavior back.

Now, if I could just figure out a way to get back the 10.6 behavior for DVD Player (yeah, I know there are other ways to watch DVDs on my mac), I'd be happy as a clam....

Another solution to this very specific problem is to not use Dashboard for the calculator, and use the Calculator App that has been part of OS X for years.

A good fix is to uninstall Lion and ML.

It's there in Lion too. Of course, my former dashboard button my keyboard doesn't launch it.

Not really. It takes several more steps and is no where as easy to use. With the Dashboard version, it's usually in focus. So hit the Dashboard key, then start typing away. To launch the app, well, you've got to go to applications... or if you've got it in the dock, you still have to click and wait.
