$tevie, good point, but IMHO pack animals have a desire to be with their packs. Acting as solitary watchdogs is not their nature. Agreed that dogs love to have jobs. Even if that job is to get belly rubs.

I think he is deriving comfort from being close to his human. As to how he found his human in the first place, that is a really good question which I can only chalk up to a mystery of Nature. It's pretty awesome however it happened.
