How long has it been sice you've seen the wristwatch icon?

My wife was just using ebay in safari on Leopard, and got a wristwatch icon. I haven't seen that in years. I thought it went away with carbon apps. Was that as weird as I think it was, or not really?

I get it all the time. Several times a day, using Word 2011 with 10.6.8. Getting near the Font menu (in the menu bar or tool bar) will give me the old wristwatch. That's with WYSIWYG menus disabled.

I've spent hours rooting out duplicates and damaged fonts, and I've trashed the Word font database thingies. Trying to access the font menu can take 10-15 seconds. I had the same problem with Word '08 & it's why I finally shelled out for Office 2011. Now I just try never to use Word. I even built a document with snippets of text in my favorite fonts, so I can open it, cut and paste the right snippet, then change the text in it, rather than use a menu to change something to Adobe Garamond.

Between that, and empty browsers chewing up 1-2 gigs of RAM, I am not happy. It makes me less likely to buy a new mac, not more!

It should make you less likely to buy Monopoly$oft Office.

Just turn off the WYSIWYG menus: they are far more trouble than they're worth.

I haven't used a version of MS Orifice more recent than X, but I remember that it and its predecessors were atrocious with fonts. IIRC no version that I used worked with Adobe Type Reunion (a must-have in the classic OS days), so scrolling through font lists was just painful, even without the WYSIWYG "feature" turned on.

I think I remember "shift" or "option" click on the menus to deactivate WYSIWYG

I have an app (forget which one) where I see it on occasion.

I *always* liked it.

I didn't always like seeing it, but I'd rather have that than the beachball.

I remember using ResEdit to change the Wristwatch icon to a spinning Batman icon. Good times...
