Let's see, the 21 doesn't have user upgradeable RAM. 27" has a downgraded stock video card. Other issues with both:
- No optical drive
- No Firewire
What else?

Anyone got a good rundown for the new iMac?

So thin you can carry it around the house for no reason.

Copied from my post on a previous thread:
Honestly, I'm glad they finally upgraded the iMac... It's been too long of a wait. I'm really happy about them adding USB 3 (FINALLY). However, I'm a little bit disappointed with the 27"... It's thinner (great). But, I'm more interested in performance. I'm a little skeptical about heat dissipation in that case. Also: 1. Does this include a 5400 rpm drive...? If so, I'm not happy about that. 2. SD card slot should be on the side (not on the back) for easy access. 3. Sorry to see firewire go... But, at least I can buy an adapter for the thunderbolt port. 4. I'll have to buy an external optical drive (no biggie). 5. We have to wait until December to see them in the stores. That's it for now.

It's way frustrating that Apple can have all the right, spot-on, components... but can't/won't put them together in a purrfect package to run their big cats.
iMac w/ SD slot & USB port on the side, plus 2 TB ports, 1 FW and eSATA port w/ 3 more USB ports on the back. User upgradeable RAM and bonus for data drive(s)... 2 X 2.5" bays being ideal. Nothing new to invent; just package the darn thing so that everyone loves it. Glossy, matte, and retina screen options. Oh, and easy foot removal for VESA mounting options. Thank you. \\\

Yeah, I'm all for the Apple design aesthetic but I have to agree re/the ports-always-on-back thing. As buzz says, I think there should be an SD slot and USB (3) port on the side for easy access.
I think the whole glare thing is blown out of proportion, but that's just my experience. YMMV. Looking forward to Macworld (and OWC) getting one in their hands so we can get some good info on the innards.

SD slot on the back is a perfect example of form over function and imo, fails as 'great design'. Great design should include ease of use - not just prettiness. Having to stand up and rotate your iMac just to use the SD slot is ASININE! This stupid design actually encourages people to buy a USB hub and a card reader for easy access.

Sitting in front, the newest iMacs really look the same as my 2010 machine with a duct-taped SSD boot drive connected via Firewire. The next time I open it up, I'll replace the almost-never-used optical drive with the SSD. This update really is form over function.
However, everything I read says that the new iMac is truly beautiful in person. Something that would love wonderful in a living area rather than an office or den. Some even mentioned that if they had gone to 32", it would be BEEN an Apple television. |
