Backpack, Messenger or Sling
#21
When I was in college, the backpack hadn't yet been invented. Well, I suppose there were army guys who had them, but we carried our books under our arms.

In law school, we were allowed to type our exams. This, of course, involved schlepping one's Selectric—and various casebooks, dictionaries, and hornbooks if it was an open-book exam—to a particular room on exam day.

I've never seen a college kid carry a messenger bag or a sling bag for more than a few weeks. Mine ditched their 'cool bags' within the first week, and went back to the tried & true backpack.

:agree: This is what I saw with both my sons and their friends. The backpack ends up being much more useful and comfortable.

I used a Performance messenger bag for most of my college years.

In my opinion backpack would a best option for him. Since he will carrying 13 inch MBP and quite understandably lot of textbook and other stuff as well. This stuff requires space a lot which a backpack can provide best instead of messenger or sling bag. Recently, I purchased a backpack from Tumi luggage collection at MonsterBags online store. It can accommodate 15 inch of laptop easily, interior are dual padded, protecting laptop from any kind of damage. Also it has accessory pouch, media, phone, and card pockets to store other electronics stuff as well.

I haven't seen many college kids using Messenger bags; most of them use a backpack. But if you have decided to gift a messenger bag opt for a cost efficient option. You should consider JanSport Elefunk Messenger Bag as it looks elegant and comes under less than $100 price tag. So in case he doesn’t like messenger bag after a while, you won’t feel bad!
