How to create new login account and move over stuff
#1
My Mac Pro has been a little wonky lately. Problems with searching for files and problems with the iTunes, App Store and several web pages that just wont load right.

I have tried about everything I can think of: deleting preferences, re-indexed spotlight, reinstalling system software, etc.

A guru told me to just create a new login account, move the old stuff over and then delete the old.

I am ready to try, but not sure what to do to make sure I don't lose stuff.

Has anyone done this or can give a little guidance?

Thanks.

What you should do is set up a new account and test it to see if the problem is gone. Then worry about transfer of data.

BatChmod (free) will fix all permissions problems you find. You can use it before or after you do the drag n drop transfers. I'd zip each folder to be transferred and then deposit them in a second Finder window in the proper New User folder. This practically doubles the space occupied by those folders, so make sure you have room on your drive.

The best way to do it is to clone your drive to an external (you should have a bootable external backup anyway) and then do the transfer from it. Either method will avoid data loss.

Create a new account. Don't ever delete the old one and transfer things as you need them.

Yes, problems were solved when logging in from a new user account.

I copied my original items to another drive, will copy back to new account and will keep old user account dormant, but still there.

Now to enter all my passwords into software, websites and email accounts again!!!!!
