I'm too darned attached to my Macs
#11
The last few years I have solved the problem by donating my last two MBPs to my kids, in lieu of a cash present for a birthday, or Christmas (did that with my Umax J700, too, which No. 1 son took to college).

But I'm not letting go of my antique Macs: SEs, IIcx, IIf, Blue G3 (still in use, occasionally). Fortunately my wife will be happy if I just clean the piles of paper (residue from two closed businesses and various avocations) out of my office area; she doesn't know from computers; just clutter.

Right now I'm missing my 27" iMac, which is at the Apple Store getting a new screen; it might take all week! I hooked up my 13" MBP to my 20" Dell monitor, but I'm learning not to take the iMac's horsepower for granted (i7 vs. Core2Duo, 16GB RAM vs. 4GB); trying to do the same things is getting me beachballs on the MBP.

BTW, over at the Natick Mall, where the Apple Store is, I passed by a new Microsoft Store. It has a more prominent facade than the Apple Store, and is bigger, but there was no one in it except staff. The Apple Store was, as usual, crowded, even at 10 AM on a Monday.

We complain about all the glued-together hardware, but it sure is pretty stuff.

Jeez, it's a tool; useful, but nothing to get emotional about.
Do you all also fall in love with your hammer, or maybe a nice pair of pliers?
I like whatever mac is my current computer, but when a better one comes along and I can afford it...well, Sayonara!

I too, feel your pain.

Almost every Mac I own represents to me, something cool that I don't see in other Macs, let alone any PC. A graceful blend of style and substance, plus some unique, even if minor, quality that draws me to it.

And where you can be told how you are supposed to feel, by people who don't know you at all.

Refuse under any circumstances to jettison my lamp G4, which is currently in use as my music machine. The other Macs, don't have the same magnetic force.

Oh, I forgot. Got one of those, too. Not a strong attachment, as originally I bought it for my wife (who had to abandon it for PCs). May find some kiddie software and let grandkids use it. Still love the adjustable-arm screen; much more flexible than the current iMac.

This MBP was my present to myself when I left journalism full time. It was my "Freedom and Freelance" machine. It has been used on many important projects and even though I accidentally beat the tar out of it, the things keeps chugging.

I have a beige G3 desktop I can't seem to let go. 300MHz G3 with two 128 mb and one 64 mb of ram, and these are the low profile chips. I also have a USB card installed. This was a great computer in it's day. Easy access to everything inside, it's just fun to open and tinker. I guess I'll keep it.
