Printer sharing not working from Panther -> Mountain Lion?
#1
Hi everyone,

I have an Epson 1280 connected to an old machine running Panther. This machine is networked, with printer sharing turned on, yet my Mini running ML can't seem to detect the shared printer. Anyone know if this is a known OS bug?

Do you have Epson drivers on the Mini?

Yes.

Good question ... but should Bonjour be necessary for Printer Sharing? (And if Panther has Printer Sharing but not Bonjour, then how is it working?)

That Epson has a USB port. What happens if you plug it directly into the Mountain Lion machine?

Also, if you have an Airport Express you could test it with, printer sharing might work better through that than the old Panther Mac.

Yes, printer sharing up to Leopard seems to be incompatible with Lion and above.

My solution was to install Printopia on my Leopard print-server to enable Airprint. Lion and Mountain Lion can print to any Airprint printer.

'Not gonna help you if you're stuck on Panther. Sorry.

No, but that WAS helpful ... if only to know not to waste time on it! Big Grin

I have a Samsung printer connected to a Mac mini running Tiger. I also have an iMac running Lion and I can use Print Sharing to go from the iMac to the printer on the mini. So it can be done but I had to jump through a few hoops to get it to go. (Unfortunately it was some time ago and I don't remember which hoops in which order, but it didn't seem to be terribly hard, even if not perfectly straightforward.)
