Thanks for all the recommendations here. I wonder how loud Time Warner will whine when I cancel my 'digital phone' service and port the phone number to Ooma. Looks like it may take up to a month to port.

I figure the ooma will pay for itself in 5 months, so yay ! And the iPhone calling option is cool too...

They tell you to expect a phone number port to take up to 30 days, but mine was finished in two or three.

EDIT: FWIW, my landline provider was Verizon.

My landline port (VOIPo to T-Mobile) took a few days, though T-Mobile said it could take up to a couple of weeks since landline ports take longer and they have no control over when the previous carrier releases the number (whereas cellular to cellular ports are usually done in 24 hours).

My T-Mobile to Google Voice port took 24 "business" hours (72 real hours as it was over a weekend).

I haven't used my landline to make calls in ages, but I wanted to keep the number, so I went the Google Voice route. $40 in costs ($20 for a T-Mobile pay as you go SIM + airtime and $20 to Google for the port).

Woot occasionally has a refurb for $100. (We ported ours while we went on vacation.)

iPhone calling option?

It used to take about 2 weeks on-the-nose, now it should just take a few days once you fill out the forms, etc. They always say up to 30 days, in case there are some unforeseen issues (unlikely) that can occur when dealing with the numbers and providers.

Also, don't cancel your service with TWarner yet...just do the port. Once the port has completed, that will effectively cancel your TWarner service, but of course you'll want to call them afterwards to confirm and make sure.

Ah.. it costs. Well, still cool if you have a 'minutes limited' cell plan. we don't.

True dat. Shortly after my landline number was ported from Verizon, I received a final bill from Verizon. That was kinda cool - saved me from having to call to cancel my service with them.

I ported an ATT cell number (which we'd been using as our "home phone" for the better part of a decade) to Ooma. Took about 10 days, IIRC. The initial prediction was a month.

Service with the Ooma is much better...
