Robert, it seems we're both very research-oriented so I think you might enjoy this quest. I found learning about the different weight and manufacturing practices (and how that relates to quality) fascinating.
Ditto the foam factory comment, we bought our base items from there and they're still in use 7+ years on and very comfortable. I "rolled my own" back in '06 and haven't looked back. As I say, my setup has been amazingly comfortable for us. elmo3 did the same thing and was very helpful in advising me at the time. There was a 75-page fw thread on it then that by now has probably grown to a zillion pages but I also found that very helpful. I ended up getting the whole set -- a polyfoam base, an egg crate on top of that, then a 4 or 5" memory foam topper -- for about $500. I got my original foam topper from http://www.healthyfoundations.com/toppers.html -- it was important to me to get foam "made in usa" and a great warranty because of concerns about toxic offgassing and quality. Perhaps valid concerns, perhaps not, but I got what I wanted for much cheaper/more comfortable than a new conventional mattress, especially "typical" branded (Tempurpedic, etc) memory foam. Costco also sells complete memory foam mattresses, the whole enchilada, not just a topper. We ended up replacing our topper with a Costco one as one of our pets soiled our healthyfoundations topper and the Costco one was right on the money. Don't recall now whether that one is made in USA or not. Here's something else to consider: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/visco-memory-foa...ress-queen You may also want to check out http://www.bergad.com -- also USA-made. Here is my FoamFactory order from '06; for an extra $5 they trimmed the foam down to Queen size and we made dog beds out of the scraps. Keep in mind this was sans memory foam topper: Quantity Price/Ea. Total HDR8F HD36 Regular Foam - Full Sheet - 82"x76"x 8" 1 $217.00 LRE1-5F Lux Regular Foam - Eggcrate - 82"x76"x 1-1/2" 1 $29.00 Shipping: Free Shipping: $0.00 Total: $246.00

I purchased a Westin heavenly bed on Roberts recommendation several years ago (I know Robert bought a different brand comparable). It broke down fairly quickly. I learned two things. One, it isn't the same bed they use in the hotel. Two, your bed would have to be sagging to a ridiculous degree for them to stand by their warranty. I paid $1800 to have a queen heavenly bed delivered from Seattle and I won't do that again.
As a replacement my wife bought a sealy with the ability to raise the head or feet. Handy at times and I like the vibration feature. It helps me to get to sleep. Ideally I f it where just me I'd buy an extremely firm simple mattress or I would go with a solid surface with a topper but that isn't very wife friendly. ( ![]()

Do you really need a new foundation? Most are a wood box covered with fabric.

Dave,
I recently found out the typical lifespan of a Simmons beautyrest mattress with pocket coils (i.e. the Westin Heavenly and W beds) is about 4-5 years. They commonly sag at that point and you have to go through the warranty for replacement. I know from experience the requirements. The Simmons warranty requires the mattress be free of stains, damage, etc and sag be at least 1.5 inches in depth. Simmons requires the "do not remove" tag to be intact and will send someone to inspect and measure the depth of the sag. This is one of the reasons why I _always_ recommend people use a waterproof mattress pad and leave all of the paperwork that is attached to the mattress in place. I've been fortunate enough to have Simmons replace a W hotel bed mattress under warranty. The whole process isn't that difficult as long as you have your paperwork in order. I'd do it again this time except the mattress isn't sagging at all. It'd be pointless to make the call since there is, in actually, nothing wrong with the mattress. It's just no longer the right match for my wife. And, be wary of buying just the mattress and using it with an old or existing foundation. Using the mattress with an old foundation and/or a foundation from another brand can void the warranty. Platform beds are a different matter entirely. You'll have to check the warranty to see if using it with a platform bed makes a foundation unnecessary. We're definitely not going to buy the mattress without actually trying it in a store. Most resources for info about mattress discourage it. I can understand the reasoning. There are no "standards" for design and quality when it comes to mattresses and it's also a very personal decision. BTW, a great resource for mattress info is Also, it pays to visit several stores - not stores in the same chain - but different stores entirely. They are definitely not created equal when it comes to pricing, delivery, returns/refunds, disposal of old mattress and foundation, etc. Again, Robert

In the sleeplikethedead site, the "4 S"s - Sealy, Serta, Simmons, and Stearns & Foster came close to bringing up the rear.

Dennis,
Definitely for innerspring mattresses. Not necessarily for memory foam, at least not upon first glance. Robert

I bought a decent quality, firm mattress at Sam's, put it on a platform. Bought 4" memory foam (the firm stuff, not the Walmart stuff, got mine on Ebay), put it on top, and I sleep well, back pain and all.
The whole deal cost less than $400 and I've had it for 8 years. |
