who would buy 18-55? people who get the body alone have other plans and probably want the 18-200 or 270 anyway, or primes.
Even with an 18-270, I'll come back from vacation with several thousand shots. An extremely high(97/98) % of them are 18-24 mm. The next highest % is 270. stops.
It's sort of like buying a laptop with 2G of ram when you'll probably want/need 8G. If you're on a budget ( and a kit lens is basically a budget lens) that laptop will work until you expand your budget or figure out what you need, Especially if it's your first laptop/DSLR.
Or wait for a body only deal.
and dream of taking pictures.
Sure, but I think space-time meant who would want to buy the included lens from you, the person purchasing the package deal. What kind of secondary market is there for such lens?
Someone with an older non-VR version ?
Someone with an older 18-105 ?
Someone with an older 18-135 ?
It's a cheap short lightweight lens.
But you have a point - you can get a new one from B and H for a hundred bucks
Still, even getting 50 or 75 bucks for it might better/smarter than also buying a zoom with more reach and keeping the 18-55 for a back-up lens that sits in a bag almost never getting used . Like I do. :-)
