My ultimate goal is to add older NPR Fresh Air podcasts to my old iPod. I see the most recent 40-odd podcasts which I can subscribe too. But for the life of me I can't figure out how to download an older episode and add it to the Podcasts in my iTunes Library and in turn have them appear (ideally with descriptions intact) in the podcasts on my iPod.
I'm in iTunes 12 and I'm finding it so inscrutable - this seems like something I should be able figure out.
For example: how do I get this one?

Without an active rss feed, you need to download these older items and add the mp3 files to iTunes. Then you can create a playlist and sync it to your iPod.
Here are the instructions and the URL for the Fresh Air podcast feed. The Louis CK episode may or may not be listed in the rss.

Isn't that crazy? How did we go from having an app so easy and intuitive to this thing we have now? We have to post here to figure the most simple things such as how to download a podcast, how to add a field to the view, how to get the sidebar back, and how to add music to a playlist. These are discussions that come to my mind. I'm sure there have been more. I actually DO wish someone could break the stranglehold apple has between itunes and our iDevices. Surely it can be done better.

I've complained for years that Apple's iTunes setup makes life unnecessarily difficult for people who listen to audiobooks, especially those who rip them from CDs.
Windows players just let you drag files and folders into the device. None of the playlist complications.
But Windows players? The few I tried were harder to navigate.
