A few weeks ago, I asked for some opinions on cell service, not just the phones that come with the services. Anyway, I finally decided to go with Cingular, after having been with Verizon for the past two years. The main reason is the rollover minutes feature, and GSM service. We have the family (3 phones) plan, 700 minutes monthly, one text messaging service for about $100 per month. Verizon was costing $140 average for 400 minutes; they do have a new plan that is better now, but for me now, Cingular won out. Two more years to go now, but for me, two years is a short time... I'll leave Cingular in two years if I don't like them.
On a trip to Florida, Cingular's service seemed to be as good as Verizon's, but I only get a sporadic signal in my house with Cingular, whereas Verizon's signal was strong here. I live in a fairly remote area...

I was in the same situation until I got a phone with better reception.

Laser,
Considering you have a family plan, I'm not sure rollover minutes is going to be all that useful. I'd suspect a plan with a sufficient number of minutes in the month will serve you better than a plan whose minutes will rollover. For example, with three phones in use, how many minutes will you expect to rollover into the next month?
That combined with shoddy reception makes me think you should switch to a different provider. I'm surprised you didn't stay with Verizon considering they offer good signal in your area. I know I'd put quality signal ahead of rollover minutes without hesitation. It's one of the reasons I dropped Sprint in favor of AT&T years back.
'course, Cingular bought AT&T and things have gone progressively downhill. I could stay with Cingular and probably get better signal with a new phone. The problem is none of the plans compare to what I have right now. I'll spend far more money for a minimal increase in minutes. So, I'll be dumping cingular as soon as I find a suitable phone with T-Mobile who offers comparable signal in my area.

IMHO, there's nothing worse / more frustrating than not being to use your phone reliably at home.

Ditto for me too. Except I can get reception most of the time. Cingular's service is improving in my area, so I expect it will be better soon. Even with 3 phones, we don't use very many minutes most months; and that was the problem with Verizon – the months we did go over cost a LOT!
Our phones are LG, almost the same as we had with Verizon, except with cameras.
Like I said, I'll live with it for these two years (probably), unless something goes wrong within the 30 day trial I have; if so, it'll be back to the search...
(Cell phones - cain't live with them, cain't live without them) As I type this, SunCom's commercial with the singer (forgot his name) is on TV...

Laser,
Improving in the area doesn't necessarily equate better soon or better to the point of good enough in a timely manner. I know from experience and believe me, I decided never again a long time ago. That's why I left AT&T for Sprint and then in turn left Sprint for AT&T again once its GSM service was good. It's too bad cingular skewed AT&T customers else I'd stay with them without hesitation.
That said, in my experience, signal improvement in the area means if it gets better, it will do so very slowly and at the convenience of the provider, not the people who subscribe to it. My guess, it'll be very good if not fantastic by the time your contract expires. Unfortunately, between now and then you'll be so frustrated with the service that you'll jump ship when that time finally arrives.

Thanks, RM, but actually, the service in my house here in the woods is okay most of the time, just not as good in this location as Verizon. So far in my travels, Cingular seems to be about the same for reception. I'll see how it goes...
