Am I the dumb a$$ of the century?

DP doesn't use a router, he screws his coax right into the SCSI port on the back of his Mac.

Well, I'm not so sure of that... I did some Mavericks installs that "killed" a messenging app we use at work.. Finally figured out it was the OSX firewall - which had been off, but was on after the Mavericks install. Might have been something else, but I sure didn't turn it on (our firewalling is handled by routers for themachinesi n question).

Well, I've only managed installs up to Lion, but the Interweb seems to concur with Firewall defaulting to off.

Nah, no SCSI on the original Mac, he actually soldered a patch directly into the bus. Much more efficient.

Firewall? I was checking on some things in SysPrefs and noticed the Firewall box is not checked.

That's correct. The default is "off".

I have just presumed that the browsers I've used have all that stuff covered

Browsers have nothing to do with it.

and I have never experienced any issues-no malware, trojans, etc.

No doubt! That's partly because you use a Mac and probably partly because your router is doing the firewalling.

So, should the Firewall be activated in SysPrefs?

Only if you're not using a router or you have disabled the router's firewall or if you're using a portable Mac and take it to places it shouldn't go.

Am I also the luckiest interwebs surfer ever as well as the dumbest?

Yes, probably both.

the century is still young. there is plenty of time to be outclassed

And the competition will be fierce.
Doubtful you will hold the title for more than an hour or two, at most. Big Grin Take a number, get in line--down the block, there, and around the corner...

Yes, bask in the glory while you can.

Truth be told, that never qualified you for the title. But go ahead and claim it. It make me feel better! LOL

That's correct. The default is "off".

That's always been my experience.

Yes, probably both.

Ouch, a little harsh, AA?

I think you have to be elected President first.

If you are on an insecure or public network it is probably a good idea to have on, but as most people have a router with a built in firewall, the Mac OS one can often be extraneous....
