geeking out with another smartphone... Trying the Nokia E61
#1
coming to Cingular this fall as the E62, except they will get rid of the wifi and hopefully add utms data.

the European version i bought has utms but on a different frequency than we'll be using in the states,

Gorgeous screen.
Great form factor... Like a sturdier Motorola Q. All aluminum case.
Opera browser works spectacularly.
Hands off fairly well between wifi and cell.
Supposedly makes voip calls but haven't tried that yet.

Regular readers know i am a diehard Sidekick fan, and i still think it and the Blackberry are the most elegant email devices. But this thing is very, very good. The stunning screen, much better battery life than the Q, and Series 60 instead of Windows Mobile makes it worth a serious look.

downsides.... No camera, since it's targeted at the Blackberry crowd. No dedicated row of number keys like the Sidekick. And the tiny, closely spaced keys take some getting used to.

by the way, it's a VERY good phone. speakerphone is superb.

Aw Man!

I've been having my eye on the E61 for a while. I'd love one, but the $350 pricetag is quite a throwback.

If only it had a camera it'd be pretty close to perfect.

Let me know when you sell it, I may be interested then.

Enjoy!

When the E62 comes out from Cingular, it'll be $99.

Yes, but then you'll have to pay insane data fees through Cingular.

I'm not going to pay Cingular data fees for Slow(er) data. Even then, we aren't going to sign a new contract anytime soon.

Thanks for letting me know though. Didn't know it'd be that cheap, still the lack of Wi-Fi is lame.

The E62 will have full-time UMTS, right?

The question is how much of the United States that Cingular will really cover with UMTS when they do their "mega roll-out" in October.

That may make the insane data fees worth it. I'll pay a good bit if the high-speed delivers.

I. Still. Wish. It. Had. A. Camera.

Does anybody know if there's a tiny Bluetooth camera out yet that you could carry around and send photos via your phone?
