PowerPoint, Excel and Word updates are EACH 770-870MB. Really?? I'm not even really using this, I still have 2011 but 2016 was a freebie through school. With updates this large my interest is waning.

Download them at school?

Haha yeah, I'm taking the courses online. As in, from home.
I'm at 163GB out of my available 300GB data cap for the month, so I think I'll skip these updates until needed.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I installed Office 2016 today on a machine, then ran updates... an hour later, they weren't done downloading yet. And that was on a Comcast business connection.

So, is it worth it? I can get it cheaply through work program, but was wondering if i should bother.

The 2016 "updates" are full installers. Easier to track than the paper-cut incremental and combo updates in the past, but they are larger.
I'm not a heavy user, and jumped from '08 to 16. The biggest change I notice is that the PC and Mac versions now pretty much look the same, so when I'm on my W10 office machine, there's no longer the culture shock.
