On an interesting, minor point, Erdogan has made a brief video statement opposing the coup. How, since the military has seized TV?

FaceTime!

In bizarre scenes the Turkish President appeared on CNN via a presenter’s [iPhone] blaming a “parallel state” for coup attempt.

He also called for citizens to ‘go into the streets’, suggesting trouble could erupt.

By the lighting, he looks like he's in the restroom of an airplane....

“Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command,” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said

Does that even remotely make sense? Is this guy auditioning to be Trumps press secretary?

Latest is that Erdogan has flown back to the capital and a number of military officers have been detained. So it would appear it's not over yet.

I guess this really cuts the chances of Erdogan converting over to an executive presidency, or giving Syrians citizenship.

Hmm, some pundits think the opposite. Erdogan has been consolidating power for months and this was an attempt to derail that. He may now force it from secular to Muslim state.

Apparently the coup has failed. Something to be said for a democratically elected government surviving, but this morning they're talking about judges being arrested in a purge of the judiciary.

Tough times for Turkey regardless.

Now that we've learned more, this actually was a fair description of what happened.
