brother hl-2340 still the preferred simple 2 setup choice?
#1
older daughter needs SIMPLE 2 SETUP mono laser printer.

we have had good fortune with the low end brother models.

she needs to print wireless via macbook air.

does she need "wireless" brother ala:

or can she plug usb into her wifi router/modem and get wifi access?

if so, then maybe this a better option:

any and all thoughts appreciated.

be well.

go with the wireless (or wired ethernet) version. Will work more seamlessly doing what it is designed to do. You might have luck using a usb-only model, but will almost certainly have more reliable/better luck printing with a true network-ready printer.

Rob,

If she intends to access the printer via wireless, then definitely get a model that has, at the minimum, ethernet. Better yet, get one that has both ethernet and wireless. It'll make wifi printing more reliable.

There are always deals on B&W laser printers, especially when it comes to models from Brother. Always. Don't forget to check sites like staples.com and officedepot.com for not only deals but also coupons to reduce the price further.

Duplexing is a must these days and, if it was me buying the printer, I'd be looking at an all-in-one instead of a dedicated printer. The ability to make photocopies and send the occasional fax from home is _very_ handy. My family will always have an all-in-one. We use those features enough to definitely make one worthwhile.

I have an older "non-wireless" brother, but it does plug into my Ethernet network so any device, wired or wireless can print to it, just add the printer in the System prefs. (except iPads b/c the printer is not AirPrint compatible)

I just purchased the HL-L238DW for $140 including tax. Easy to set up wirelessly out of the box. Turn it on and it looks for available networks to join. Pick one and away you go. The scanner is nice for copying or scanning small documents; it does not have an auto-feeder. It will join multiple pages into one document as you scan. It also has OCR software and does AirPrint.
