Mac in a Windows office-file names too long for windows server
#1
Is there any easy way to get around the file name length (illegal characters issues) of a Windows server?

In the office I was previously I had backed my files up to the Mac (OS X) server. At the start of this school year I moved to a Windows based office. Now when I attempt to back up my files I get a error message that I can not complete the back up due to file name length/illegal characters.

Short of going through all the files and changing file names is there any easy work around for this problem? I did STF but didn't find an answer to my problem. Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks! Dave

Archieve your backup into a .zip or make a disk image if you want to be able to mount it and constantly change what is there.

C(-)ris, thanks for the suggestion. So...if I make a disk image would I need to make the disk image on my iBook first and then copy the disk image to the server? Geesh, things were so easy when I had the Mac server to work with (drag and drop). Thanks! Dave

Correct Dave, do the image on your iBook, then move it to the server.

A Better Finder Rename http://publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/ can be used to change all the names.

also, be sure all your Mac files have their proper file extensions (.zip, .txt, etc)
