"Pence refuses to respond on Trump's comments"
#11
I'm not a political strategist but then I haven't been to impressed by those that claim to be. If I was advising Pence, and wanted to set him up for 2020, here is my outline:

1) Withdraw from the race this year. Give a speech condemning Trump and say that you cannot endorse an individual with his beliefs. Admit you made a mistake associating with him, but believed that he would change his way as promised to you - a promise he did not keep.

2) Do not disclose who you are voting for (no need to upset the conservative base by endorsing Hillary), but urge everyone to look into their hearts and do what they believe is best for the country. You earn some respect of moderates and Dems by appearing to unselfish and patriotic.

3) Step away and stay quiet.

4) After the election, give a 60-minutes spiel about what you saw and your decision.

5) Then shut up until July 2019. No Fox news, no speech circuit, just be quiet.

6) when you declare, have a platform that spells out real plans that are doable (even if you don't plan to follow through)

Those six steps will make him an immediate front runner. Then by playing it straight, he can have the Evangelics, Conservatives, plus many moderates and centrists who held their nose to vote for Hillary. I fully expect who ever is elected this time to be a one-term president. So smart moves now can pay off later. At this point, the leading GOP candidates would be Pence and Rubio.

Quitters don't get past the sidelines in this game.

The Republican voters are not rational. Anything could happen.
