what caused this kernel panic?
#1
I found the Mac Mini at the log in screen. It told me that it restarted because of a problem. This is what I found in the report.

The system was trying to talk to a drive (HD, Flash Drive, etc...) and it couldn't.

If it's not happening often, disregard it...if it's happening a lot, you can do drive isolation to try to track down which device is acting up. It may be a sign of a drive or enclosure going bad (again if it's happening regularly).

Going to any OS since 10.6.8 causes KPs...
Couldn't believe when I went to Mavs from SL and got KPs, then going to Yos, and EC getting crashes/freezes! None yet with Sierra but I hadn't seen any crashes or KPs since OS9!

3rd party drivers are often the cause.
google "org.dungeon.driver.SATSMARTDriver" as the first suspect.

I have SMART Utility from Volitans Software, I love it, and yes, I did install SAT SMART driver to allow me to monitor health of external drives.

Will try to uninstall it, but, I will lose the ability to monitor external drives.

maybe I will write an email to Volitans and see what they think.

Ohm I just realized, I am saving data from a failing hard drive (from my friend
's MBP). I saves as muh as I could while the drive was in her MBP via FireWire Target Disk Mode, now I took the drive out and I am trying again in an external case. Maybe that defective drive has something to do with this.

Thanks folks.

Short answer: your Mac gets emotionally upset.

Probably not the tech answer you were looking for, but I believe the more humanistic side needs to occasionally be heard.
