I think the snow actually IS in shadow. If you view the image from a greater distance, the contrast between the sky and the snow becomes more apparent. Remember that snow can be very bright even in shadow.

There's a suspiciously straight line of pixels right where you'd expect it to be at the waterline if the picture were composited.
