Car Issues... Oh No ! But wait... YAY !
#1
My son's 2014 Ford Fiesta freaked the heck out last night.... all the bells and whistles came on, and then the dreaded message that the transmission has completely lost the plot comes up. Uh Oh.... the car as 102K miles on it. A new tranny is usually a death knell for a vehicle with that many miles.

A bit of googling, and I discovered that... at the end of February this year, Ford issued a technical service bulletin that extended the warranty of the transmission to .... ta daaa... 150K miles. So yay ! Free new transmission !

(This is the much maligned and kind of weird dual clutch 6 speed dry transmission that is really a manual transmission with an automatic shifting thingy).

mattk... yeah... it's a weird transmission and definitely doesn't act like a good 'ol slushomatic.

I'm kind of surprised that you don't like it. Maybe its a poor implementation. Its the same transmission that the VW Golf R uses and other AWD golf models. Super fast shifts, supports high torque...but like any 'automatic' transmission it can't predict the driver's needs past a certain point. My car has paddle shifters which I employ on occasion.

Yeah, but its no 6L80E. Or ST400.

Matt. If it had paddles I’d like it. It has a little switch thing that can be used. But it was sold as an “automatic “ and it’s really shaky shifting at low gears. They screwed up the gear ratios, IMHO.

Maybe you could replace it with the drive-train from the Koenigsegg. It has a single gear and insane horsepower.

Not really the same. Ford's PowerShift is a poor-man's DCT which had been plagued by engineering defects, bad firmware & software, and is the subject of lawsuits all over the world. Ford put profits over quality and some say over passengers' safety.

VW Group's Tiptronic & Tiptronic-S DSG is based on Borg-Warner's designs which VWG licensed. It's just not in Golfs. Used in most of VWG's line: Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Škoda and VW in various configurations.
iirc, Mercedes uses a quite similar B-W design also.
