Great paint for refinishing kitchen cabinets: PPG Breakthrough
#1
It was time. Our kitchen cabinets, which the contractor had painted when we bought our house, were looking shabby. After a lot of research, i chose PPG Breakthrough. Used Krud Kutter deglosser first, following the directions on the label.

This stuff is fantastic! Goes on easy, minimal drips, levels out to get rid of brush marks, dries hard enough for a second coat in 30-45 minutes. And really, really low VOC.

I used brushes with Chinex bristles.

Very very happy with the results. Even more important, Mrs. Anonymouse is very happy.

Thanks! I need to write that down. We need to redo ours. No money for a remodel, but we can repaint and re-floor.

15 years ago, we repainted our vintage Wilsonart/Formica cabinets using Glidden's Gripper as a primer, a similar product. Went from a dark walnut to a bright white. They looked great until we replaced them in the Big Remodel. The only sign of wear was a few spots around the handles of the most-used cabinets.

Wish I could paint ours. But they are the silly laminate white crap and they are peeling everywhere.

Here's an email I sent to a friend, with some more info. Definitely check out the linked blog, TONS of good info on painting cabinets:

The paint:

An article discussing the paint. I ignored the roller part, and just went with brushes with Chinex bristles. Also, check out the articles linked near the bottom, which have a ton of info on painting cabinets..

If your cabinets are oak, you may need to use a grain filler first.

And I didn't see this before--apparently mohair paint rollers work well....
