Some straight talk on Covid-19 from Donald G. McNeil Jr., science and health reporter for NYT

An interesting and informative podcast interview. (Transcript)

Struck me as neither alarmist nor rose colored. Clouds and silverlings, reassuring information and unavoidable facts.

The numbers he mentions are at least two days old based on the publish date of Feb. 27.

archived recording 1: South Korea, which has now 750 cases or more. wrote:

Johns Hopkins numbers for Feb. 28th are: 2,337 South Korea

Iran has 34 deaths listed as of today. Working backwards that implies they should have diagnosed at least 1700 cases but their number is 388. Iran is having the same problem as the rest of the world. Test kits to properly detect positive results are in short supply. The CDC gave 200 kits to California, but they currently have 8,000 possible exposures being monitored.

Yeah, that “750 or more” is from the canned preamble to the actual interview; the ‘or more’ must have been the CYA.

Numbers on this situation are probably going to be moving targets for a good while to come; as of Feb. 27, WHO was only reporting 1,766 confirmed cases. What a grim difference a day makes.

FWIW; the BBC is noting that the death toll in Iran is actually likely over 200.

Wow, that's half way to my prediction of 400 deaths in Iran. About 10 days earlier than I guessed. Working backwards, they should have at least 10,000 diagnosed (assuming they had enough test kits).
