If LBJ hadn't botched Vietnam, he'd be one of the best US Presidents ever. He pushed the Civil Rights Act through almost single-handed. He tried to improve educational opportunities for all citizens. He was a very cynical and even bigoted man but he understood the principals this country was founded on and acted accordingly.

No question he bit the bullet on civil rights but he was a product of the Senate and as such was led by the nose by the very Military Industrial Complex Ike warned about...

Civil rights were coming regardless, those lives wasted will never be recovered.
