Nearby MONSTROUSLY huge Century plant (aka Agave Americana) is sending up its death stalk
#1
We have lots of these in our neighborhood - two others have sent up their stalks in the last few years, but this one is a MONSTER! The plant is about 8' tall not including the stalk.

Here it is on March 26

On April 9

...and it has a LONG way to go...

Do killer asparagus owners typically start over with a new one, or are they out of fashion these days?

Interesting question.

That one appears to already have a lot of "babies" growing around it's base, so perhaps only the central, original plant will die post-blooming. I'd guess separating the new plants and planting them much further apart would be best for growth. Also, knowing how big a new Agave might get in that location could lead to the next one being planted further away from other things like the utility pole.

On the other hand I've noticed businesses and homeowners alike getting rid of plantings of Yucca and Prickly Pear that have been in place for decades for fear of getting sued if/when some idiot falls into them, and Agave leaves are at least as stiff and sharp as Yucca leaves so... :dunno:

I've been in this neighborhood for three years, but I think these plants have been there for decades. None of them seem to die from the death stalks - Like Scott mentioned, each one is really a cluster of plants. There is really no place else to put these tings - they are right next to the fence on one side and right next to the street on the other.

yes, I will be updating - this one should reach the telephone lines - that will be interesting.

Perhaps it is time to invest in a drone for up-close photos of the flowers in full bloom?
