Freya with pups
Closeups of pups
That's Freya buried under the dogpile there! Poor Mom.
Mom has left, pups are eating and wandering...
... as you can see, they're beginning to take on their furry "cute" forms... have begun both to wander around the cage a bit, as well as eating some solid food (carrot, raisin, TSP) ...
And it definitely appears that there are eleven:
2 sable banded
2 mink (these are the sort of darker beige-ish ones)
rest are cream
... curiously, I don't think any of the nonsable are banded. The odds are against that.

mikebw, it's all relative. That's a BABY carrot, believe it or not. It's the pups who are small relative to the carrot! (By all rights, I should be giving it to them shredded rather than whole; but they seem to be doing OK with it whole, as you can see... good for their little teeth.) And boy, do they love carrot. I've sometimes joked with people that we should all be on the same diet as the hamsters, because it's pretty healthy: fresh fruits and veggies, seeds, nuts, bread and whole grains, TSP, tunafish, etc.

They are just adorable. There's nothing cuter than baby animals.

Yeah, (I was joking)... If you put in a real full size carrot somebody might get stuck underneath and have to eat their way out.

mikebw, yes, they seem to be doing pretty well with that carrot. I've been told it's a good "starter" vegetable for these guys because unlike some others, it's easily digestible, contains a fair amount of sugar, and of course it has the vitamins which are good for their developing eyes (not that they need their eyesight all that much, but can't hurt). They also need protein and calcium... protein they're getting from mother's milk (she's getting it from the TSP mostly) and calcium from milk (she's getting it from some milk-soaked bread I've been giving her). Surprisingly she doesn't seem to care much for hardboiled egg, which is something else people suggest feeding the mom during pregnancy and afterward.

Cute squirmy worms.
Somehow I don't believe rooting through the lawn for seeds will extend my life by much. :-)

billb, well... if you think about it from the perspective that these guys are basically mostly vegetarians (fruit, veggies, seeds, nuts)... though they will also eat meat if it's available (e.g., tunafish), and will also eat insects (mealworms)... all of that is pretty healthy... fruit, vegetables, lean protein, "healthy" fats, etc.

I know what you meant. :-)
Just try to imagine a 6 foot 150 pound male foraging on the ground outside for seeds..
A little too literal and sarcastic, yes.
Norwegian humour is not always funny. :-)
