Bought a second small size Vornado fan for the bedroom a couple of years ago, to replace similar one moved to front room, aimed at laptop user. Newer one has black intake ring on back of fan, while older one has silver ring.... super easy to tell 'em apart that way. For whatever reason, which it the reason for this post, the newer *still* has an oily smell to it, that won't abate. The newer one is quieter, hence the choice for the bedroom.
Any idea(s) why the "new fan" smell persists? In the bedroom, it's OK when it's parked on the chest of drawers, aimed at the bed about 10-11 feet away, the smell doesn't quite waft that far. Lately, during hot spells, when we move it around where it's closer to people, the smell is still vet noticeable at 5-6 feet. The older one lost its smells pretty quickly in comparison. How can we deodorize "Stinky Little V".
Thanks.

Spread baking soda on the floor where the oil was deposited when you initially began to use the fan.

It's not the floor, it's the fan itself that stinks when it's on. I'm gonna out on a limb and say they used a different lubricant on the newer fan. We have several more fans (including six Vornado's), and this is the only one w/ a tell-tale scent, wherever it's moved to.

Put it outside in the sun and let it run 24 hours over two days.

Different lubricant, or just as likely a different plasticizer in the molded plastic parts. As suggested by Speedy, put it outside in the sun and bake off some of the surface residue. You might also have to wash the surfaces of the case and the fan blades.

Buzz,
Why go through all that agita. Exchange it. IF it happens with the second one, then you know it's the design of the fan. Buy a different model. If the replacement has no issues, you're set.

Can't wait to hear the solution to this.
So this "new fan" is a couple of years old? I'd be inclined to believe it's an acquired
odor.
Checked all of my Vornados, no stinkums. Latest purchased is a metal classic,
not a hint of odor.

It was born w/ the odor..., I thought it would abate/outgas w/ time, but it hasn't. I'm gonna call Vornado next week, as they've always been excellent to deal with. Best description, is that it smells like burnt oil. I'm inclined to go along Robert M's path, and perhaps take it back to BB&B, after getting another new one, and confirming it's stink-free. As noted, we have a bunch of Vornado's, and this little one is the only one in which an odor has persisted.

Another great name for a musical act: "Stinky Vornado."
