Video problem with 2012 Mac Mini in Bootcamp
#1
Good afternoon, all.

I'm trying to get my late 2012 Mac Mini i7 2.3MHz server to run Windows 10 through Bootcamp. The problem is that the screen gets a sudden green tint during the startup process, and it stays green. It does not do this when booted into Catalina, so doesn't seem to be a fault in the hardware. The GPU is Intel HD4000.

What hasn't worked:
- Updating Bootcamp drivers
- Installing an updated driver from Intel

What has worked:
- Uninstalling the driver - but then video is choppy until it reinstalls the driver by itself - and turns the screen green again.
- Unplugging the HDMI port for a few seconds, then plugging it back in.

Ideally, I'd like to use it without having to unplug/plug in the HDMI every time.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Just because it seems to work okay with macOS doesn't mean the hardware is 100% good. Have you tried a clean Windows install, or a vanilla Windows boot drive/partition?

Windows is on its own drive. This is the model with 2 256GB SSD’s. I put Catalina on one, and Windows 10 on the other. I have not tried reinstalling Windows yet - I’m hoping to avoid that unpleasantness.

Have you updated the firmware by installing the latest compatible macos?

Yes indeed - I updated to Catalina, which is the latest OS this Mac can run.

A quick search suggests making sure that the resolution is set correctly.

Also, do you have the Intel or Windows drivers installed (assuming they are different)?

It seems the display problem of my Mac Mini in Windows 10 is specific to my receiver and/or TV.

I connected the Mac Mini to my office monitor to test the resolution issue as you recommended, so as not to disturb family TV time, and there's no problem when connected to my office monitor.
The problem only exists when connected to my home theater system.
Given that the Mac is planned for use as a home theater PC/Mac, that is less than ideal.

I had tried the Intel drivers, default Windows drivers, and whatever might be installed with Bootcamp.

At least there's some sort of answer here, if not a solution.
I'm using JRiver for the home theater software - it runs in Catalina without the video issue, but there's no option to turn the computer off by remote control, as there is in the Windows version. That's another issue altogether, though.

Thanks to all for your help.

Regarding the desire to shut the Mac Mini with a keystroke - Keyboard Maestro to the rescue!

Remote control of this Mac is accomplished with a FLIRC IR USB device that takes a remote control IR signal and outputs a keystroke.

Keyboard Maestro has a "Shutdown" task that does not bring up the confirmation dialog box or require a SUDO command, and can be triggered by a keystroke.

I miss OneClick for OS9, but Keyboard Maestro has proven to be a useful alternative for OSX.

So - I can use JRiver in Catalina rather than in Windows, to avoid the compatibility problem that produces the green tint.
