See I know I said this was about the right price/capacity but now I am seeing how much I like having the 2 extra USB ports on my Seagate external, which the WD do not have.
Maybe I can swap the drives between the cases?

I have read of anybody shucking the Seagate externals for the bare drive. If so, then the drives should be physically interchangeable. It's a matter of whether the Seagate controller board will function with the WD drive. At worst, if the controller or drive doesn't die in the table, you'll have an external without the two extra USB ports.

be careful - I know WD portable drives DO NOT have SATA ports, but instead skip it and go straight to USB. I don't know if the 3.5" drives do the same.

Yea, pretty safe bet that the 3.5" versions will have SATA connectors on the drive. But, also a pretty safe bet that you'll break at least one tab opening the drive (case will probably still look ok and function fine with one or two broken tabs).
