May have to spend the summer there. What's the area like? How about housing?
Anyone living in or around Newport, RI?

Whew. Good luck. Summer rental in Newport isn't on the cheap scale. I hear the Breakers may be available for the right price.

I grew up across the bay in Narragansett. Newport is cool, but crazy in the summer. LOTS of tourists. Hopefully, you won't have to drive around a lot. The traffic can be pretty nuts in the summer. In fact, we rarely ever went to Newport in the summer. We used to wait for everyone to go home.
As far as housing goes, I'm sure any kind of summer rental is going to set you back a fair amount. Are you going to have a car? You might want to consider the surrounding towns (which will still be expensive, but not quite as much).

Private message me w/ details of when you plan to arrive. A friend just bought a B & B on the water about 15 miles from Newport. Has lived there all of his 55 years and knows the area backwards and forwards. He can rattle off long-term places to stay and what to do/avoid.
He also smokes Cohibas (if you saw a previous thread) and is very generous. Regardless, somehow get to Lupo's in Providence and see Roomful of Blues.

...and try to eat at Al Forno (in Providence) at least once while you're there.

Summer housing only prices are lucrative enough that local home owners rent further away and put their abodes up for rent.
Summer rents are quite high. It's what the market now bears. 30 years ago Newport was a dump. Not every place, but especially the old waterfront down where the ferry used to cross the harbor. Many have spent a considerable amount of $ and effort to turn it into the wonderful rehab and resort that it is now. It's now quite nice. Congested, but I could spend a leisurely Summer there, as long as I also didn't have to work. I'm in Newport once or more a month. PM with a specific question is OK. |
