Of course, if it's very very temporary, and a light load is expected, then screw the pilot holes.

They'd probably not be needed.

It sounds like you're building a jig to ascertain what angle or angles might be needed.

This is when I really wish I knew how to draw (or use a drawing program).
When the snow clears off the deck, I'm going to try to show what I want to accomplish.
