naughty word - Starlink
#1
my client will be Saratoga NY for a week in a hotel.
VzW & T-Mo have 5G coverage there for a hot spot, but who knows the up/down of it all. They offer up no particular info on speeds.
If I need NoMa onto his MBP, I'm not sure there'd be the bandwidth for me to remote control what is needed.

So he is looking into StarLink.

Anyone have any experience? I assume it needs a much better view of the sky than a hotspot?
I assume it can run WiFi and CAT6 simultaneously for extra devices.
It looks like one can get on and off month by month.
WAN IP is found thru MacOS Network?

and don't gimme any 5h1t! Dammit! It's not for me!
He plays for the other team anyway.

I don’t know anything more about it, but I believe there’s a mobile version.

Have you looked into 5G mobile standalone hotspot devices? (Not cell phone hotspot) They work pretty well unless there is no cell phone coverage in the area.

I've stayed in mid-level hotels with terrible wifi. We're talking 1Mbps in the early evenings. MAYBE 5Mbps at 5am. Good luck calling the front desk. All they can do is request maintenance to restart the router. Call ahead to ask about the wifi speed? Equally useless. 99% of the time, they have no idea.

Question: What's the wifi speed? I need to do work while I'm there.
Front desk answer: "Yes."

LOL!!

we have looked a stand alone hot spots, but neither VzW or T-Mo will commit to speed available in any particular area at any particular time.

WiFi is too slow in our past experience.
TeamViewer and LogMeIn don't pass audio last time we tried.
TV repeatedly kicks me off for "commercial" use. 15ms 2x a month?
WtF?

NoMachine is the only reliable method so far and requires either a port forward.

Starlink does require a clear shot at the sky. Less than other satellite options though. They do have a mobile version.
