I Re-Cut The Cord
#1
Well I "re-cut" the cord today. We officially got off of cable TV about 2 years ago and went to YouTubeTV for general viewing. Recently, my wife and I were talking about which subscriptions to end that we were not using with the primary contenders being ATV+, Disney/Hulu and Netflix. But then we agreed after a short conversation that it was the most expensive subscription that we were using the least, that being YouTubeTV at $83 a month.

In reviewing our habits, with a news media blackout in place since the last election, we were watching about 15 minutes of local news a few times a week and that was about it. When we thought about anything else there were a few instances of watching reruns of Diners, Drive-ns and Dives to kill time.

So today I cancelled the YoutubeTV subscription, becoming a hero to my wife. Then downloaded the ATV app for the most local station, which not only carries the news, but also some other programming. Free.

This just felt good...I highly recommend it.

I replaced DirecTV Now with YouTube TV.

I had DTVN since its inception (remember the free Apple TV?). It was supposed to be $35 for "life."

It had climbed to over $120. About what I was paying for DTV satellite.

Good for you!

I didn't know there was such a thing. I will have to check it out.

If it's not available for me, I do have an antenna I can use.

Sounds like that worked well for you. You have absolutely nothing to lose with just canceling completely. Unlike cable, you can resubscribe in an instant with no penalty.

But for others reading this, just pausing your subscription is something to consider. I'm pretty locked in for NFL and college football, and I usually keep it going through March Madness. But then I just turn it off from May-September when we won't be watching anyway.

I didn't realize one could 'pause' a subscription and maintain your subscription price. Or maybe I misinterpreted what you're saying.

Under Manage Plan, you can currently pause your account for up to 24 weeks. I think it also gave me an option to reduce the price by $10/mo for 6 months.

Nice. realized a couple of years ago we didtn watch anything local and cut DTV... don't remember how much it was, we only had basic.

only streaming now -- amazon (part of prime), apple (part of apple one, which use use for backup and news and magazines), netflix and the hulu/disney bundle (which is prob on its way out too).

We are an all TCL/Roku house -- roku TV has hundreds of "live" channels + local stuff from around the country... so if we are really bored we fire that up. TV, movies, documentaries... its truly endless. Its like TV of old... set times, days, shows. We could realistically eliminate the streaming apps and still have thousands of hours of TV to choose from. If you have a roku, worth exploring.

additional "free" channels -- pluto, freeverse, youtube free stuff, etc, is enough that we would still never run out of tv/movies to watch to the day we die
