A pretty old 17" VGA-only DELL LCD--it displays a perfect image for a couple of seconds, then goes off.
Tested on different computers w/different cables.
Ideas?

Sounds like an inverter. I had the same problem with a Gateway LCD and replacing the inverter fixed it. Check Ebay for the inverter. I got mine for $20 or $30.

Dunno. Any cheap fix if that is the problem?

Is this a one-size-fits-all type part?

Nope. you'll need to do some research but the fix shouldn't be too bad. Once you get the thing open, its just swapping a circuit board.

The diagnosis doesn't seem rock-solid enough to warrant the effort (and the $45 or $50 shipped by eBay).
It's my father-in-law's monitor, and he's already bought a replacement... I was just looking to snag an extra monitor for next to nothing.
