More oddball iPhone-y questions
#1
1) How long is battery life supposed to be? I'm not sure I'm getting anywhere near what I should...

2) Is there any way to reorder items in a list, e.g., Favorites?

3) How to deal with email accounts which are POP, e.g., gmail? If the iPhone downloads them from the server, will the downloaded messages then sync with Mail.app when you later connect the iPhone to your Mac?

4) For some reason, I'm not getting a video to show up on the iPhone which is in iTunes... when the iPhone syncs, it's set to sync the videos, but it doesn't show up on the iPhone. What gives?

5) The iPod portion of the iPhone seems not to want to play a large number of my songs from iTunes... when it comes to one of these songs, the iPhone will either just skip over the song to the next, or will hang on it... I'm pretty sure my iPod does NOT do that, so again, what gives?

Most of these answers can be found by googling the exact question you typed here.

http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

2) Is there any way to reorder items in a list, e.g., Favorites?
Favorites, EDIT -> Drag the item by the right side

3) How to deal with email accounts which are POP, e.g., gmail? If the iPhone downloads them from the server, will the downloaded messages then sync with Mail.app when you later connect the iPhone to your Mac?
Probably not, best bet is not to delete the messages from the server.
Settings, Email, Gmail account, Advanced, Delete Messages Never

4) For some reason, I'm not getting a video to show up on the iPhone which is in iTunes... when the iPhone syncs, it's set to sync the videos, but it doesn't show up on the iPhone. What gives?
Likely not encoded to iPhone or iPod specs. iTunes will play many types of videos not supported by the processors in their handheld devices. Try right-clicking and choosing Convert for iPod (or what ever the command is)

5) The iPod portion of the iPhone seems not to want to play a large number of my songs from iTunes... when it comes to one of these songs, the iPhone will either just skip over the song to the next, or will hang on it... I'm pretty sure my iPod does NOT do that, so again, what gives?
Not sure, sounds like they are encoded in a format other than the iPhone will play. Get info and see what the file type is.

Hmmm... I don't think I'm getting anywhere near the times they are saying I should be getting, though I haven't actually timed it to be sure. Also, it seems that their timed testing was only using the one feature or aspect at a time, which is unlikely to be what you are actually doing. I do also notice that they make a repeated point of saying that using Wi-fi really reduces your battery time. What surprises me a bit is that I've used it as an iPod, and haven't been getting anywhere near the 24 hours that they've claimed...

The Favorites --> Edit thing, I would never have figured that out myself, thanks!

The movie/songs issue, I'll have to investigate further...

Uhhh, maybe it's worth repeating: just because I COULD find these answers via Google, doesn't mean I'd WANT to. There is/are some advantages of asking people for answers rather than Googling... not the least of which is that Google is not interactive (yet!).

Wow, I like the direct responses given here. Let me try: How can I clear "missed calls" without clearing the entire list of recent calls??

Blurb, that's a good one; I'd like to know that too. Googling didn't immediately turn up anything, but I did find some interesting info here:

... hmmm... seems I may have gotten one of the phones with a crappy battery...

I find that I have two "modes" for my iPhone:
a) Demoing it for people all day long (just got back from a party, guess what I did all night?)
b) Using it as a phone and ipod more or less exclusively (some email, some web browsing)

When I'm demoing the thing all day, I find that it's battery lasts about a day, day-and-a-half. When I'm using it more normally, about three days.

3) How to deal with email accounts which are POP, e.g., gmail? If the iPhone downloads them from the server, will the downloaded messages then sync with Mail.app when you later connect the iPhone to your Mac?

For POP mail accounts, I find that you want to set the iPhone to leave the messages on the server for a few days/a week in order to make sure you also get them on your main computer (where you have it set to delete from server after retrieving).

Luckily for me, .Mac mail is IMAP so I'm really REALLY enjoying replying to emails on my iPhone and then having them show up as replied when I dl them to my BlackBook!

5) The iPod portion of the iPhone seems not to want to play a large number of my songs from iTunes... when it comes to one of these songs, the iPhone will either just skip over the song to the next, or will hang on it... I'm pretty sure my iPod does NOT do that, so again, what gives?

This is USUALLY a symptom of a multi-iTunes-user household. My wife bought some songs from iTunes (using her account), but the songs are on my machine. The rest were ripped from CDs or bought under my account. Guess which ones don't play on my iPhone?
