...another one joins the Mac 'fold'...
today we wrapped up the family birthday celebration celebrating my wife's
grandpa's birthday and my daughter's birthday... we decided to jump on
stingme's ibook offer and give her something that she can organize her
itunes on her own and surf the web and write stories and such..
ill have to teach her to use iphoto and comic life which i know she will get
a huge kick out of...
Of course this was not without some hang ups... I replaced the front bezel
for the display as it had seen some wear and tear.. I also replaced the CD-ROM
only drive for a combo drive... both were ebay purchases and very reasonable.
I magic erasured the heck out of the shell (it was nice to take apart the assembly
and get Q-tip swabs in all the little nooks an crannies which accumlate oils and
gunk from other previous users - yuk!) I used the ifixit manuals and the powermedic
manual for the display and combo drive upgrades... it was not hard.. just time
consuming
i left the 30Gb HD as is and maybe as things get full ill replace the drive.
I would have liked to max out the ram, but i want to see how it performs for her needs
first and then contemplate buying ram.. the ram for this ibook is more expensive than
for an intel iMac!!! that is sick!
I purchased a copy of Tiger and installed that on top of the base install of Panther
without OS9 and installed all of the photos i have on my iphoto library
relating to her. And i have a free superduper back up of the base installation.
i sold the Tiger DVD and i expect i will update to Leopard when it comes out
I also purchased a copy of Bumpercar, web surfing software for kids, I am pleased
with this software in my testing of it with her in my iMac and she has a copy for
her iBook.
she has a limited access account and is not able to muck up the system preferences
and has access to only certain programs she would normally use..
and the base install of the ibook has appleworks which will be great for her needs.
all in all, she was completely floored since she had no clue she was getting
a present today (we had a girls sleepover last friday with kids presents)
A big thank you to StingMe for his ibook offer!!
regards,
Edgar
