[quote zero]European standards for toxic chemicals are FAR, FAR ahead of the United States. The criteria to take regulatory action against a chemical are much higher in the US, and result in a huge lag time in generating laws to protect the public.
And yet iPhone is entirely RoHS compliant. (Don't know if the earphones have to be reformulated for sale in Europe, however.)
Hopefully some enterprising company will make a good replacement earphone set for the iPod with the long jack, control clicker, and microphone. I forgot how much Apple's white earbuds drove me mad until I got my iPhone and tried to use the current iteration of them.

That is double edged though......
We have moved many our products to RoHS compliance - which essentially means leadfree. Some things like processors for processor upgrades aren't all available yet in Lead Free solder. There are some fall outs we've seen too on RoHS part + takes more energy to make them and to build with them because of higher temperatures required for proper baking of the non-leaded solder.
We're cool with all that... and actually - a lot of our stuff was already RoHS without us needing to change - but the double edge sword is the documentation and filings (added expense and time) needed for RoHS compliance.
Just an example... to me - consumers should think when they buy. Kills me when green promoters show themselves to be hypocrites through their own actions or inactions. Lots of opportunity for every INDIVIDUAL to make the difference when it comes to safe products, energy savings, etc - that's where it starts, not with overbearing regulation.
Our new home is green and that was our choice to make happen and glad to make the choice and amazing the actual roadblocks we've had to hop to make this course stay true. Funny really - not surprising - many politicians talk it up, but that's for the benefit of getting votes since action doesn't often back it up. We're very pleased that our own state senator has been very proactive with the entire green program.. any way.

Tell me about it. The local Whole Foods allows a lot of activists to petition customers for donations and other causes. They also walk our neighborhood and ask for money. They'll tout something like "we should all be driving hybrids" and when I ask about then environmental impact the production and recycling of the batteries has on the environment, they are clueless.
When they tell me their group is a "non-profit" I put out the fine print on their materials says "[such and such], LLC" and they'll respond with "oh, but they don't really make much of a profit." Sorry, if you want me to give someone money, they had better as heck be a 501©(3). When I ask how much profit the company made last year they can't give me a figure. I doubt they had a clue it was even a for-profit corporation they were working (for free) for and requesting money-for-nothing from customers.
Some of them are vegans. They wont use any animal by-products, so a lot of their clothes are often some sort of plastic. Often when I ask, they aren't even aware plastic comes from oil.
Or when they get on me for driving a car that gets 20MPG, I ask how long their commute is. It's always longer than mine. Who cares if they get 50% more MPG, when they're driving 500% more.

"The level of phthalate esters, a chemical linked to birth defects, in plastic coating of iPhone earphones wires is greater than that allowed in toys or childcare items sold in Europe, according to Greenpeace."
An iPhone is marketed and used by 6 and under year olds ?
There are 6 year old pregnant children in Europe ?
So Greenpeace thinks they should be safe for pregnant six year olds in Europe ?
Someone at Greenpeace is knocking up six year olds ?
And plans on letting them use iPhone ear buds during the 6 year old's pregnancy term and is worried about birth defects ?
The above is no less a leap than the logic offered by Greenpeace.
