Increase RAM on eMac?
#1
i upgraded my eMac 700/640Mb to Tiger. i like the changes but performance seems a bit sluggish. would upgrading the RAM to 1024MB (about $50) give me a significant bump in speed? this computer is mostly used for web, internet radio, and word processing.

the ram would help. No doubt about that.

Does that machine go to 1.0 or 1.5GB?

Tiger might seem sluggish, but I hardly notice, for most things, any difference between the Pismo and the Mac mini (G3/400 and G4/1.42GHz).

The Pismo has had Tiger for over a year with just 512MB of RAM.

What kind of RAM does an emac use? PC133?

PC133 for the eMac. 640 means you have 1x512 and 1x128. I'd pull that 128 and put in a 512. Well worth the $50 or so for the upgrade. I think I have a 512mb stick sitting around here somewhere...

i checked over at lowendmac. this is a 1st gen so it can take 2 512 133s. the sluggishness is in web page drawing so its hard to know if it's the eMac or my internet signal at that particular moment.

RAM isn't the cause for poor web browser performance. Do you have at least 5 GB of free space on your hard drive? If so, then I'd try a different web browser, such as Camino http://caminobrowser.org/

Ram is expensive for the eMac. I need to upgrade.

Is this why my eMac is so slow?

DIMM0/J1600:

Size: 256 MB
Type: SDRAM
Speed: PC133U-333

DIMM1/J1601:

Size: 128 MB
Type: SDRAM
Speed: PC133U-333
