California is not a right to work state. II'm a union member, but my employment is still 'at will'. I can quit or be fired at any time without notice.

How far does he want to push?
Similar case locally few years back.
Real estate company (mid size) had courted the top salesgirl at a smaller office. She served her notice (2 weeks) and on the day she was supposed to start they gave the job to someone else. Their claim was the 'other' person was more qualified. She sued them for breach of verbal contract. She won a very small settlement and the right to apply for unemployment....but does your friend want to go thru that? She is also 'marked' for any other agency (tho I do think that's unfair).
Did your friend sign anything? Workers Guide ? Urinalysis ? Anything he had to do 'before' he took the job, especially if the new company signed for it....shows intent.

She dragged everyone thru the mud...insinuated many non-truths...basically did a "Judge Judy" act.
Like you said...she was a top sales girl. All she had to do was notch it up to experience and apply at one of the other realtors. She made such a circus no one wants to take a chance on her having a meltdown.
