Ancient Roman Road Gets Virtual Life

. . .A museum on Tuesday unveiled a virtual reconstruction of one of the bustling arteries that led into ancient Rome, allowing visitors to wander through rebuilt monuments and interact with the city's political elite.

Using a concept similar to that of online virtual worlds, the project creates characters, or avatars, that roam the ancient Via Flaminia, exploring funerary monuments that lined the road, bridges and arches. They can also roam through the villa belonging to Livia, wife of Rome's first emperor, Augustus. . .

. . .For now, the characters only speak Italian but the museum hopes to have the program available in English, too. . .

I'm still impressed at the quality of engineering that went into the roads and aqueduct systems all those years ago. And despite functional proven methods, we still eff up our plumbing and road engineering to this day.

Of course using tons of slaves to hand-build the roads and aqueducts wouldn't work too well in this day and age.

I think I found the "explore" option, but it currently is only the playback of a short walk through from an Unreal Tournament level with pictures of the interior mapped to walls and random items from the museum tossed in along the way. http://www.vhlab.itabc.cnr.it/flaminia/r...zione.html I guess it will be better when they get it uploaded to Second Life.

This is another site that uses visual icons without accompanying text, so you have to mouse over every d_mn one of them to find out what's what -- and even then, it's not clear what the choices mean.

Designers of such major web projects need to test them on users, not just on one another.
