I connected my new (refurb) iPod about an 90 minutes ago. It's still showing the Do not disconnect message. I'm prepared for it to take a while, but would like to know what to expect. The Quick Start booklet says "the first time you use iPod, let it charge for about four hours or until the battery icon shows that the battery is fully charged". The battery icon does show that it is fully charged, but I have that flashing "NO NO NO" red circle thing going on.

they do that sometimes. Dismount the iPod in iTunes, or on the desktop, and if it isn't mounted either place, shut the machine off, then disconnect while the computer is powered down.

I think maybe I'm confused about that "Do not disconnect" thing: is it just there to keep you from pulling the plug without first ejecting/unmounting the device through iTunes or the desktop?

eject it, then the DO NOT DISCONNECT disappears and you should see if the battery is charged or not.

Yes, that's why the "Do not disconnect".
It has nothing to do with the charge state.
The warning may be do to the way the iPod is set up-- if it's in manual/disk mode, you have to unmount it yourself.
Sometimes something odd happens and even in the auto state, it won't unmount properly. I've had this happen, and updating iTunes cleared it up. One changing from auto to manual back to auto fixed it.

It's on manual and is almost certainly never going to be on automatic.
Have not had a chance to actually listen to it yet. Tomorrow isn't looking any better for that.
