I wish they would stop creating and just add some things to XP. I don't like Vista and it sounded like the NEW WINDOWS would not be and upgrade to VISTA but something new.

Incidentally, there will be an upgrade to VISTA next month...SP1 (heard announced)

Not being an upgrade to Vista sounds like a good thing to me. VIsta was going to be revolutionary. It's not much beyond XP. XP is an okay OS crippled by activation. Vista could be an okay OS, but is crippled by activation, DRM, and weird bugs. Try Ubuntu instead. Free and I'd think worth your time.

I don't think that's going to work for Sam.

And for me, the only reasons I have Windows machines is to do things that can only be done on Windows.

I feel bad for such users. I've changed workflow to accommodate my platform of choice multiple times. Classic Mac OS-->OS X-->Linux all have required sacrifices. Generally the changes made have had an overall improvement in my workflow so I welcomed my new overlords with open arms. There was a time people wouldn't move from DOS to Windows, Mac OS, Amiga, etc because what they "needed" was on DOS. That perspective quickly faded away as the industry passed them by. With virtualization these days, I think the majority of users could make do with Linux or OS X.

Still, I get there are specialized applications that perform better in their native environment. My designer has a Windows XP and OS X box for her work.

Everyone could tell the core was still the same when the updates were inline.

2000 and XP take the same updates. NT 5 vs. 5.5. I've never looked to see how they
called XP sp2 -- and/or if it took the same updates (and Fister along with it), but it seems
to me, that Vista is like a trailer that keeps getting heavier, and even though the engines
in the cars get bigger, and the transmissions (video cards) are better, they are still having
a tough time hauling this pig of a trailer behind it.

The worst thing M$ did was put that "Windows Experience" meter in the control panels.

I would love to see how the 2.4 Core2 with the ATI 256mb (a zapped out MacBook Pro)
rates, but these other machines I've seen in stores that are barely rating 3 out of 5 -- they
are funny Funny FUNNY!

Since when was the heaviest thing a computer had to run 5 times worse than a large
script with a 900MB PSD file, that includes processing blurs and effects until core temp

CPU mfgrs call that "previously rare instances of processor maximization."

M$ calls it "booting up the machine."

Jimmypoo, I just set up a "new" computer for a long time friend. My brother sold her his "old" computer about six years ago. It was a 200 MHz Pentium with 64 MB of RAM, 1.2 GB hard drive with Win95. She was just using it for her AOL mail, occasionally trying to buy things on ebay and typing WordPerfect documents. It took about 3 minutes to start up and get online to read email.

The new computer is a 2 GHz AMD 64 processor with 1 GB of RAM, 80 GB with WinXP Home SP2. It takes about 3 minutes to start up and get online to read email. The only real change she has seen is now she has a "modern" browser that lets her buy stuff securely and let her transport files on a thumb drive between work and home instead of on floppies. It is essentially 10 times faster, bigger, and better, but due to the massive overhead of the OS, her user experience has changed very little.

I installed Vista on two high-end CAD/CAM workcenters. They have more than 2 GB RAM and a beefy nVidia video card. Vista is still a dog.

Your friend could have used a modern broswer on her Windows 95 machine. Opera 9.25 system requirements. How well it would run, I don't know. I have a client with Windows 98 and Opera 9. 256MB RAM, Early Celeron processor. Not fast, but it works.
